Addis Ababa, 18 November 2018

We have successfully concluded our deliberations. The significance of the decisions at this Extraordinary Summit cannot be overstated.

Our common purpose, as an institution, is fully and very well set forth in the Preamble of the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

Every element of this mission presupposes a highly capable African Union Commission, to which we want to give our thanks. Today, we have launched the Commission onto a higher performance trajectory, with beneficial effects that will be felt for decades.

I want to thank you, Excellencies, Heads of State and Government, for this result. Throughout this process, your unwavering commitment is what has made the difference between good intentions, and meaningful action.

I also wish to take this opportunity to record my appreciation to the ten distinguished men and women of the Reform Advisory Team who have assisted us with this assignment from the very beginning.

The reform is not an end in itself. What counts is how we use it to secure a prosperous and peaceful future for our continent. I therefore urge the Commission and the Member States to put these decisions into effect as quickly as we can.

It is also important to maintain the same high standard of consultation and technical rigor, as the remaining reform items are prepared for consideration at our next Summit, collaborating closely with other Organs.

Excellencies, I thank you once again for your participation, and I wish everyone safe travels back home.
