Gicumbi, 27 June 2011
President Kagame today visited Gicumbi district where he addressed thousands of residents who gathered at Cyumba ground in Gicumbi district. The President also visited Francois Mugiraneza, an exemplary farmer who, through hard work, innovation and commitment, has been able to position himself as one of the most successful farmers in the district.
President Kagame also officially launched a Rwanda Environmental Management Authority village environmental care project in Rubaya Sector. The Kabeza settlement which is home to 43 families was selected as a demonstration site for the implementation of a highly integrated poverty reduction project under the Rwandan PEI programme, due to its steep hills that have been rendered infertile by erosion. The overall objective of the REMA model village is to showcase best practices on how to mainstream poverty reduction in the conceptualization of Umudugugu.
Addressing residents of the district at Cyumba ground in Rugerero sector, President Kagame commended Gicumbi district for being the cradle of the liberation struggle which has transformed steadily into the cradle of development: “This district serves as testimony that if people work together and with commitment they cannot fail. All we need now is to work hard and fast so that we can achieve the development that we want. Every Rwandan has a story of progress to tell and the evidence is there”. The President asked the Gicumbi residents to ignore those who disparage their achievements and work even harder.
President Kagame told the youth of Gicumbi to value their culture so that they can grow up as responsible people who will make their country proud. The President advised farmers in the district to devise modern ways of farming if they are to overcome the challenges encountered in the district, especially that of land scarcity: “For agriculture to benefit us and uplift our economy, we have to use modern ways that are more effective”. The President emphasized that Rwandans will only earn their dignity through hard work and focus.
