Kigali, 19 July 2011

The Belgian Ambassador to Rwanda, Ivo Goemans today called on President Kagame to bid him farewell as his 3-year tour of duty comes to an end. He was accompanied by Mr. Antoon Delie, Minister – Counselor and Ag. Charge d’Affaires.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Amb. Ivo Goemans said: “Our discussions with the President dwelt on cooperation between our countries – a cooperation that goes far back in the history of our two countries. We are happy with the way Rwanda uses the development assistance it gets. We don’t feel like it’s a matter of throwing aid to any country that needs assistance. Rwanda has a vision and a strategy which makes cooperation easy”. He said that although Rwanda faced and still faces huge challenges, it has decided to face them and go forward.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Mary Baine said that the outgoing Belgian Ambassador and the President discussed investment and cooperation. “The President and the Ambassador also talked about information sharing between the two countries which will enable criminals living in Belgium to face justice”.
